Gareth Southgate's hope, Harry Kane breaks England's goal record in the 2022 World Cup final

The Tottenham Hotspur star has now scored 49 goals, just four behind Wayne Rooney as the country's all-time top scorer.

Kane scored a goal from a penalty kick as England beat Switzerland in a friendly match at Wembley Stadium, Sunday morning WIB, 27 March 2022. That goal became the winner after Luke Shaw scored the equalizer after conceding earlier by Breel Embolo.

The addition of one goal in the match made him now equal to Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record for England. With his form still at the top, Kane has the opportunity to break Rooney's record at the 2022 World Cup.

"He's on the list of extraordinary people," Southgate said.

"Harry will appreciate that history, it will mean a lot to him to be on that list and be among those names. You are favorites to break that record."

Asked if he would have preferred Kane to break records before the World Cup, Southage said: "I want him to break records in the World Cup final!"

"I think he's pretty calm about it, he believes he can get there, his goals-per-game record is very good. I don't know the comparison to Jimmy Greaves, but I imagine he'll be the only other player to come close to him."

The England national team will appear in the 2022 World Cup which will take place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18. The Three Lions aim to win the title for the first time after winning the trophy in 1966. Finally, in 2018 in Russia, Harry Kane and his team-mates finished fourth.
