Xavi did not Expect Barcelona to Win 4-0 at The Santiago Bernabeu

Barcelona coach, Xavi Hernandez, admitted that he did not expect his team to win so big when they traveled to Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid in the El Clasico match on the 29th jornada of Spanish La Liga, Monday (21/3/2022) early morning hrs.

Barcelona won a landslide victory 4-0 in the El Clasico match at Real Madrid's headquarters. Brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, plus one goal each from Ronald Araujo and Ferran Torres became a nightmare for Los Blancos.

This victory is certainly very good news for Barcelona, including for the coach, Xavi Hernandez. However, Xavi admitted that he did not expect his team to carve a landslide victory at Real Madrid headquarters.

"We worked hard for this result. However, we did not expect to be so superior in their stadium," said Xavi Hernandez after the game.

"We expect a more open game. However, I feel very happy," continued the Barcelona coach.

Similar to Barcelona's victory at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2009

The way Barcelona won this time is indeed similar to how the Blaugrana last silenced Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, namely with a 6-2 score achieved by Pep Guardiola's Barcelona in 2009. Xavi admits the two results are similar.

"Comparable. We are far superior, in terms of goals and games. We can go home with a big smile," said Xavi.

Remembering Barcelona's victory at the Bernabeu in 2009, Real Madrid managed to score the first goal through Gonzalo Higuain. Then Barcelona scored three goals in return.

Sergio Ramos scored again for Real Madrid to make it 2-3. However, Barcelona again succeeded in adding three more goals to close the match with a 6-2 victory.

Thierry Henry and Lionel Messi both scored two goals in that match. While the other two goals were scored by Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique each.

Stay Grounded

Despite the euphoria obtained through this victory, the Barcelona coach wants his players to stay grounded.

"We have to keep working. It's not a trophy. We have to stay humble. We celebrate today and then have to rest and think about the game against Sevilla. That's three more points," said Xavi.

"I don't think it will be enough for us to win La Liga, it's very difficult. However, today was an incredible kick to the teeth from the league leaders."

"First we focus on a place in the Champions League and then we will see again. This win strengthens the existing project. We haven't got what we want. We have to keep going," he continued.
